Frequently asked questions

  1. What is Hackathon?

CarnegieApps Hackathon is a 24-hour event where you work in teams to build a cool application - be it a game, a mobile or a web application. At the end of the competition, you will win fantastic prizes for different categories such as best overall app and best design, along with the best rookie award.
  2. Can anybody participate?

Undergraduate college students at any class levels or major, and from any university are welcome to participate!
  3. Can high school students partake?

Unfortunately, no. We only accept undergraduate college students.
  4. Does it require any coding knowledge?

You don't need to know coding to win a prize, but a person on the team needs to know how to code! Students interested in design can create mocks ups and even win best overall design catergory! In particular, you can join a team of programmers and lead the app's design if you don't know how to code.
  5. Why 24 hours?

24 hours is not too short and not too long. It's enough time to build a functional prototype that communicates your idea to the panel of judges. It forces you to be creative and good at managing your time, which is all part of the fun.
  6. Does one have to stay on campus throughout the entire event?

No. You're welcome to come and leave as you please during the hackathon period. But staying overnight is part of the Hackathon experience, so please do!
  7. Is there any form of assistance available throughout the event?

Yes. Mentors who have great experience will be available during the competition to help you develop your idea and answer any concerns you have. The CarnegieApps team will be available for any assistance that you might need. Feel free to ask any of them, or inquire from other hackathon participants. For general help not related to the hackathon, you also can ask any CMUQ student.
